M. B. Arts and Commerce College, Gondal

Maharajashri Bhagavatsinhji Arts and Commerce College, Gondal, founded on 2nd May 1964, has completed 43 years. Academic year 2007-08 is the 44th academic year of the college in progress. In 1958, Maharajashri Bhagavatsinhji Public Utility Trust Fund, Gondal State, Gondal, associated with the name of the beloved maharajashri of Gondal, thought of starting a college in Gondal with a view to provide facility for higher education in Gondal itself. An informal coaching center called Janta College or Svadhyay Mandir, for students aspiring to appear for external examination at the Gujarat University was started in the Town Hall of Gondal in 1958. Some 59 (fifty nine) students appeared as external students at the Gujarat University at the end of the academic year 1959-60. This was the seed that sprouted into Maharajashri Bhagavatsinhji Arts & Commerce College.

At the time there was no college in Gondal. The students had to go either to Rajkot or somewhere else. There was a need for a college in Gondal. To meet with this requirement Maharajashri Bhagavatsinhji Public Utility Trust Fund gave Rs. 2,50,000 to Gondal Nagarpalika to start and run a college in Gondal with the name of Maharajashri Bhagavatsinhji associated with it.  The aim of starting a college was to provide the facility for a college in Gondal so that students of Gondal and surrounding villages can avail higher education at their door-step.

In March 2007 The College applied for Accreditation by NAAC & successfully secured C++ Grade.

Maharajashri Bhagavatsinhji Arts and Commerce College, Gondal, founded on 2nd May 1964, has completed 42 years. In 1958, Maharajashri Bhagavatsinhji Public Utility Trust Fund, Gondal State, Gondal, associated with the name of the beloved maharajashri of Gondal, thought of starting a college in Gondal with a view to provide facility for higher education in Gondal itself. An informal coaching center called “Janta College” or ‘Svadhyay Mandir’, for students aspiring to appear for external examination at the Gujarat University was started in the Town Hall of Gondal in 1958. Some 59 (fifty nine) students appeared as external students at the Gujarat University at the end of the academic year 1959-60. This was the seed that sprouted into Maharajashri Bhagavatsinhji Arts & Commerce College.

At the time the students had to go either to Rajkot or somewhere else.

The reason why I recounted the history of the college is to give an idea of how the goals and objectives of the college as envisaged at the time of inception of the college have changed considerably. The challenges of the college have changed and it has traveled a long way since inception adapting to changing times and requirements of the society.

Today, facility for higher education is available at almost every small town and students can avail the facility of distance learning programs and external courses of various universities. Private and self-financed institutions are coming up everywhere and foreign universities are knocking at the door. Now, our aim to provide the facility for higher education is no longer sufficient and does not justify our existence in the society. We now have to accommodate the fresher concepts of education and strive for the comprehensive development of our students. We have to accommodate latest teaching- learning technology in our class-rooms. We have to accommodate latest trends in our syllabi and start new courses to meet the changing requirements of the society. Consequently, we introduced computer science as optional subject in the commerce faculty and started D. C. S. in 1992. We have upgraded our infrastructure facility for library. We have started a Career Counseling Center in the college for our students. A Network Resource Center is started in the college to keep pace with the latest technological developments. In short, the college has taken initiatives to meet the fresh challenges.

We now have a fairly good infrastructure facility. The teaching and non-teaching staff works in perfect coordination for an overall development of our students. In addition to giving them academic training we try to provide them with an opportunity for an overall development of their personality by organizing various extra curricular activities. Our efforts are to see to it that our students stand competition with other students from other institutions across the country.

The faculty and the non-teaching staff of the college always welcome and enthusiastically involve in every activity in the interest of the students. The administration has always remained transparent and open. The management have shown keen interest to do everything in the interest of the students and education. As a result, the students of this college have done remarkably well in the fields of art, education, business and commerce, agriculture, journalism, law, army and social work. This is a matter of pride for us.

The exercise to get accredited by NAAC is also a part of our constant efforts to better ourselves. The whole exercise has given an opportunity to the faculty and the non-teaching staff for self-assessment and innovations. I take this opportunity to congratulate the Coordinator, NAAC Steering Committee and his team for excellent work they have put in. I wish them bright success. I also acknowledge the whole hearted participation of the faculty members and non-teaching staff in the accreditation process.

CHAIRMAN MESSAGE

Its indeed a matter of great pleasure and satisfaction that I have remained associated with Maharajashri Bhagavatsinhji Arts & Commerce College, Gondal since it’s inception and I have seen the institution grow in to what it is today through all its stages of development. It is indeed a grace of god that I was made instrumental in this noble work.

The college management has always given transparent administration. The objective of starting a college in Gondal was to provide quality education to the youth of Gondal and surrounding villages, to bring about qualitative change in the personality of the students through various curricular and extra-curricular activities, and to inculcate in them sound moral values and noble qualities so that they come out as ideal citizens when they finish their education. The management has always taken positive steps to translate this objective in to practice. For this the management has always responded positively to any proposals and/or requirements from the principal.

Under my chairmanship, during the last one year or so, since the college decided to go for accreditation by NAAC, we have built new building for college administrative wing, improved library and computerized it, made alterations to create a new auditorium, upgraded computer center, and raised and strengthened the compound wall and built a new main gate of the college within a very short period of time. Many things are still in the pipeline and we intend to go on improving our infrastructure and facilities.

I take this opportunity to congratulate the principal, the coordinator of the steering committee for NAAC accreditation, and all the staff members of the college for the tremendous work they have put in the preparation of this Self Study Report. I am indeed glad to acknowledge the fact that this college is one of the few colleges of Saurashtra University who have gone for NAAC accreditation so far. I am sure the college will come out with flying colours in this accreditation process.
